Powerlineman Profile: Kenny Adams - Linetalkers

About your company or yourself, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. You can include as little or as much detail as you’d like.

I began my career in the utility industry about 30 years ago at a small municipal system in Chattanooga, TN completing my apprenticeship through the IBEW 175. My first job in supervision was in 1997 and have been in a leadership role ever since. Coming up through the ranks, I always remembered the ones I worked for over the years and fully appreciated someone who never forgot where they came from. I always strive to be that leader realizing that success lies solely in your people. I take that part of my job very serious. I have currently been with Jessica for  9 years who also works in the business. She is my rock both at work and at home. She has two children. Samantha is 15 and Justin is 13. I have three daughters; Taylor 25, Bailey 23 and Madison is 20.

Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way? Any advice for other men, particularly young men who are just starting their journey?

I don’t think there’s any smooth roads. If there are, you probably want off of it.  I do think that the trials and rough times that come our way are necessary and define who we are today. My advice to the women and men coming up today is first, work safe. Never let you guard down with this. Always speak up no matter where you are in your career. Learn as much as you can from others. Just listen. Set your career goals and with every move you make, if it doesnt support that goal, don’t do it just for the money. Be a good craftsman or craftswoman. Love your families.

We’d love to learn more about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a brand, organization or service provider? What sets you apart from others?

I am currently a Manager in Transmission for Duke Energy in Florida. I began Linetalkers Podcast in August of 2019 after about 3 years of procrastination. Had it not been for Kim, her constant pushing me along, I would have never launched. She founded and operates the social media for the Wives of IBEW LU 1245 which has over 12,000 followers. She is the rock that a lot the linewives lean on during crisis when their spouse is away. Kim has cohosted with me since episode 3.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to linemen, in the industry or generally?

Honestly? Greed. Greed with employers, greed with each other. In my opinion, It destroys the brotherhood and comradery necessary for the safety and success of the entire trade.

What is the craziest thing that has happened to you on the job?

During my apprenticeship, I was arrested for having drugs in my tools bag. Of course, it was a prank and totally setup by the two linemen on the crew. Times have sure changed from then that’s for sure. What don’t kill you makes you stronger they say.
