Most of my career was spent in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee.
A very beautiful place to live and work!
Like most companies involved with line work, we had many families which contributed several members to the trade. It was my good fortune to become friends with many great linemen over the years.
Several years back we started rafting and canoeing some of the local rivers together. The group size varies but we always have a good time.
My favorite trip is when we go down river a few miles and camp out at Mountain Island on the French Broad River. We fish, swim, and eat well. This type of activity with my fellow workers exemplifies the bond created while doing dangerous work.
The talk around the campfire always gravitates to our past experiences together and who did what. Hurricanes, blizzards, ice storms, etc. On our most recent trip we camped out two nights and brought two rafts plus seven kayaks.
I hope everyone can make such good friends out there while having such a rewarding career.
